Bowral

Bowral, the retail hub of the Southern Highlands, is a beautiful country town with a rich history, idyllic countryside and temperate climate. During the 1860’s Bowral became a favoured rural retreat for wealthy city dwellers seeking fresh air and relaxation. Sydney’s elite left a legacy of stately mansions and estates surrounded by manicured European style gardens that lend it a distinctly English country vibe. Vineyards, olive groves, horse studs and orchards are dotted around the landscape, as well as many historic manor homes.

Today, Bowral retains its authentic country charm but has evolved into an upmarket town with a thriving “street shopping” and rich in community spirit, Bowral has a calendar of annual events. Bowral is fast becoming a foodie’s haven with more than its fair share of award-winning wineries and acclaimed restaurants, as well as gourmet cafés, alfresco eateries and tearooms.

Home to many celebrities, Bowral is probably best know as the home town of cricket legend Sir Donald Bradman, the Bradman Oval and International Cricket Hall of Fame are a major drawcard. Corbett Gardens, in the centre of town, is also significant and is one of the region’s oldest parks and the site for the town’s famous annual Tulip Festival held in late September.

The country lifestyle, beautiful homes on large blocks and excellent schools make Bowral highly desirable and increasing attractive to young Sydney families seeking a tree change. From charming weatherboard cottages to heritage manors and country estates, Bowral is renowned for its architecture with more than 80% of dwellings freestanding homes.

Accessed from Sydney via the M5 motorway, Bowral is close enough for residents to commute to work and enjoy a relaxed country lifestyle away from the stresses of city life.
